Het Scheepvaartmuseum en de Universiteit van Amsterdam nodigen de leden van de Linschoten-Vereeniging en andere belangstellenden uit voor de publiekslezing 'After the Time of the Flemings' door Prof. Stuart B. Schwartz (Yale). Deze lezing gaat door op donderdag 20 januari 2011 om 20:00 in de Aula van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (Singel 411, Amsterdam), en is gratis toegankelijk.

Een korte introductie:
"The episode of ‘Dutch Brazil’ (1624-1654) has often been treated as a historical parenthesis in the history of Brazil and in the history of the Atlantic World, but its effects both in Brazil and beyond shaped the history long after. This lecture will analyze the lingering heritage of the Dutch occupation, and its significance for the rise of sugar colonies in Barbados, Jamaica and Suriname. It will give special attention to the case of Otto Keije’s failed attempt to colonize the Wild Coast based on his experience in Brazil. The plantation system, the patterns of slave supply, and the internationalization of the sugar market in the South Atlantic all derived their character from the experience and collapse of Dutch Brazil."
